Very generic devices worked OK, but all sorts of slightly unusual graphics cards caused headaches. If you do a bit of googling on Ubuntu 10.04 and the GeForce card, you will likely find lots of moaning, and a few tricks that somebody used to make it work. Usually adding something the the grub boot line to alter the graphical mode the system starts up in.
First, hold down the shift key as soon as the machine starts booting. This will get you into the grub command line. Then, from your google searching, hopefully you have a video mode number to add to the command line. The e key lets you edit the boot command line, to add additional parameters to it.
