Indeed, I might even swap them for resolvers, as I have quite a few
resolvers for things like the spindle and the candidate motor for the
X axis has a broken encoder and a resolver which can be fitted.

However, if I could figure out a way to read the serial data stream,
possibly into a UART or BSPI component then that would be nice as it
would make commutation easy and mean there was no need to  home.
Homing can sometimes be a nuisance on a lathe if you stopped mid-job
with steadies etc set up.
