For other voltage level translation needs, I can recommend the 74ALVC164245 (16 channels wide, 2 independent 8-channel units, bidirectional) or the 74LVC8T245 (basically an 8-channel version of the above).
They have proved to be quite robust, never had one die from ESD, but if you hook 12 V to an input, it WILL pop. The work fine down to 1.8 V CMOS levels, and up to 5 V.
