Ok, I over-reacted..
The parallel port has always been designed to sink, not source. So while I
can get 5V from the USB port or the CNC machine, I can't get 15mA from the
port is it's not there. If you're making a machine, having 5V on hand is no
more difficult than your stepper supply voltage.

But I suppose recent ports have a higher drive capacity, and opto's run off
lower current now, and Gecko have well tested that it all works ;-)
