You have probably already realised that you can't use the
Smoothstepper with LinuxCNC.
For the parallel port interface (assuming you want hardware step
generation) then the Pico USC s likely to be a simple thing to plug in
and wire up.

making a breakout to suit or by buying a breakout from Mesa there is
the Mesa 7i90HD

Note that that needs a different version of LinuxCNC, for which (as
far as I know) there is no live-CD install. You need to install normal
Linux, then an RT_PREEMPT kernel and LinuxCNC from the package
manager.
