I probably would not trust a time estimator unless I tested it anyway. For 3D carving, if your short segments are very similar you could do a test run by cutting air for 1000 lines or so, then tweak the software and re-run the tests with the same gcode. That's what I did with Mach3 years ago. Although I ran the tests over hours to try and optimize the cutting speed. But that was 8+ years ago.
Make sure you are using the new planner in LinuxCNC. (I don't know what version you have installed) I understand the new planner is much faster than the old planner when it comes to short segments. If you go back into the archives for this list you will find the test results that Sam and others did with the new planner. I think that happened about two years ago.
