I don't know Tod, it may be tied to axis error.  I have also noted that, 
but like you, its not the behavior I expected.  I'd call it a bug 
myself, but my oar is just a toothpick, so see rule #2 of that famous 
sign.

Perhaps we users need educated by someone who actually knows the reason 
for this behavior?
