The 6i24 is much cheaper than the 5i20.
The only possible reason to prefer the 5i20 would be if you need a
card that can easily use a different bitfile when started from a
different configuration.
(The 5i24 and 6i24 use a flashed-in bitfile that can only be changed
by using Mesaflash).
Typically the bitfile only ever gets changed i the daughter-cards get changed.

Sounds good. My current lathe build uses a 6i24 and 7i49 with a 7i44
connected to 2 x 8i20, 7i73 and 7i84.

The 6i24 does work with LinuxCNC. It uses 5i24 bitfiles.
