Greetings everyone.

I made the jig for the little monsters tapered gibs fab, establishing the
angle by setting the jig flat on the remains of the Sheldon's compound
tapered gib. Ought to work, right? Well sorta.

About to quit for the night, I picked up that gib and slid it back into
its home in the compounds gib tunnel, pushing it on thru with a thin
tool until the compound was pretty well wedged. Whats this? I can grab
the thin end, with 3/4" of it sticking out the far end of the tunnel,
shake it up and down about 20 thou, and enough sideways to say there was
still about 10 thou of clearance at the front end. Pulled it back out,
cleaned up my best mill bastard, laid it on a flat, and started drawing
on the fat end on both sides. Its hollow in the center of its length,
again on both sides, but I keep taking 2 or 3 strokes and testing the
fit, which is getting better. But as the file is turning the fat end
white, I discover that about 3/4" of the fat end has been broken off,
and brazed back on as the crack, about a thou wide and rambling, is
filled with yellow brazing. One of the better jobs if I do have to say
it myself since I've done a bit of it myself. And another crack is
becoming visible about another half inch beyond the brazed one. Runs
about 2/3rds of the width as near as I can see.

I don't know as I have it dead correct yet, but before I make another
brass gib, or maybe steel, I am going to scan it with a dial to see how
much taper it has over its surviving length, and shim the jig to match.
Minus .0005"/running inch.

I am beginning to think I shouldn't ever take anything apart. I find way
too much trouble when I do... ;-)

Cheers, Gene Heskett
