Cost might be an issue. When the entire computer costs $35, adding $30 to the total is quite a bit. But I'm also thinking in terms of volume and space. With Ethernet I'd need a switch and that increases the volume by maybe 30% I am thinking about Machine Kit as a motion controller, for something much smaller then a Bridgeport mill where the entire device, controller and servo motors are powered by a battery. Mesa is almost cost effective if using the $60 board.
Who was it that said he wanted a separate Ethernet port for the Mesa card and one for the general purpose LAN? If that really is needed then use a USB <=> Ethernet dongle to gain a second Ethernet port. With the Raspberry Pi 3. People are getting actually BETTER performance from the USB Dongle then the built-in Ethernet port because the built-in port is 100BaseT and you can get Gigabit dongles that in real-life on the Pi can push 200 mbps. But the Pi 3 as WiFi. So if you use that for the general purpose networking (web surfing, file transfer, ...) then you can use the built-in Ethernet for the Mesa card and not need the USB dongle.
