That was my reasoning too, Jon.

And now, advice wanted. The encoder counts + when turned cw. But
following the rules of the road, that backs the crossfeed out. I
reversed it, but that doesn't quite seem correct either. Which is
correct? I want it as close to hands on the crank as I can get it,
until the timedelay times out anyway.

Another oddity, until I have moved it by a short keyboard jog, the dial
is completely ignored. I can adjust the gain, but the counts fed to the
jog-count input are ignored.

Now, to go make z work just like it.

But while I was playing just now, I ran htop in a 2nd shell, and found
that linuxcnc wasn't even in the top 25 for cpu loading! The X
compositor, named compton, was burning up as much as 185% of the 4
cores. 150+ just sitting there doing squat. So obviously the video is
the biggest hog in the snake pit that is the pi video, by a >10/1
margin.

Neither glx, nor drm are working, so the video has a detectable lag.
Frame rate is perhaps 15/second at best. So I have to pester the
debian-arm folks to get that fixed.
