Need to build a couple stands for 11x27 benchtop lathe and benchtop mill. My thoughts are to make the lathe stand as one rigid box as opposed to the more common separate pedestal style to make use of storage space. Want to use 4 x 4 wood for rails on top and steel plates on top of 4 x 4's for headstock and tailstock mounting, while leaving area in between open for custom tray with drain to catch coolant. With this type of design would it be better to shim under the lathe itself as opposed to leveling the stand to eliminate twist? Would it be good to put some material such as sorbothane between lathe and stand?
