I have a Cincinnati contourmaster converted from tracer to cnc. I had the spindle rebuilt 10-15 years ago. It lasted about 3 weeks before it developed axial play. I tore it down and winged it in setting the preload. It was not going back to the guy in Portland that screwed it up! Now it is screaming at me. Quiet with no load but really bad under load. Muffs are required!

So: any recommendations for bearing arrangement? I'm thinking of two angular contact pairs forward and a double roller at the rear. It seems to be a good compromise between stiffness and speed. Lately I've been doing a lot of milling with 1/4" coated carbide at 3450 rpm. The tool holder is a truncated taper of CAT 40 size but held on by a big nut.

Ideas, suggestions, WAG's, SWAG's...

Thanks in advance.

Dave
