Greetings all;

I need some advice. I finally made that special stud to mount a metric
drill chuck to a T nut in a slot on the mills table.

I have all these brass slugs fixed so they are keyed into a scallop in
the edge of a 7/8" R8 collet that fits the head of a 4mm capscrew in the
lower end of the slug. So the next operation is to set it into the
spindle, and position it so the rotation center is directly over the
drill bit, chosen to be a fairly wiggle free fit on the shank of the tap
that will be held in this one.

Good idea but the drill bit doesn't seem to want to self center, despite
moveing the table and the drill bit around looking for the magic spot. I
haven't tried a small center-drill yet. Is that the fix, or do I need to
treat the bit in a drill doctor? Or both?

I'm also apparently running into the bottom of the tapped hole in the
side thats holding the 4mm cap screw for the keying, which wants to
knock it offcenter around 5 thou as it drills past that, but its pretty
well centered again when it exits the top of the slug.

However, rather than finish this one, which will need cross-drilled thru
the top about 3/16" from the end for some 4mm set screws that will clamp
the square butt of the tap, so I think I'd better do one for a 4mm tap
next, its going to be "popular". For that I need to work on the clamping
jig so I get a consistent mounting for the round rod while I'm drilling
and tapping those holes, so that the local cat surplus won't mess it up
if it gets locked in for the night.

But how best to prevent the drill bit from doing the sailors hornpipe
dance when the brass first touches it? Thats the $64 question.

Thanks everybody.
