Well, I built a flood coolant system years ago, and use that
when conditions merit.
See the last picture here: http://pico-systems.com/CNCconv.html
The blue thing is a Little Giant pump of the seal-less
type. It just sits in the tank, and a vertical shaft drives
the impeller. I have a valve that I think is similar to a
toilet shutoff valve on the head of the mill, and I can snap
a LocLine tube onto that. The valve allows me to throttle
the amount of coolant to just what is needed. With the
smallest LocLine nozzle, you get a 1/16" jet of coolant that
doesn't shoot all over the place. I also made several
coolant shields to retain the spray when doing heavy
cutting. See http://pico-systems.com/shield.html This
allows you to recover the coolant as well as all the swarf
for recycling.
I use EnCool 9 from Engineered Lubricants, it was
recommended after I told them the kind of materials and
tools I use. I can leave the vise on the machine for months
and all I get is a little bit of a black stain under the
vise. I do wipe the vise slideways down with LPS 1 after
using coolant and run the movable jaws back and forth a
couple times, wiping and applying the LPS 1 to make sure I
don't get rusting under the movable jaw.
It all works really well.
