That's the failure mode of one of my parents house roofs, which is starting to fail after only 150 years or so. (or it might be the oak pegs that the sandstone slabs hang from). The bit we re-roofed uses stainless nails for the laths and aluminium pegs, that might last longer. The house we re-roofed is already over 500 years old.
