A floating tensioner is a bad idea any place that backlash matters.  It won't 
remove any of the backlash caused by the slack it is taking up.

A layer of glass-fibre reinforced parcel tape on the outside would counter the 
stretch.

One application where a 3D printed version would probably work very well would 
be a floating belt tensioner.
