on my rpi4b, running raspios armhf buster, libmodbus is libmodbus5, I 
have that, and libmodbus-dev installed to build LinuxCNC from github.

A synaptic search for modbus also finds 3 python and python3 versions of 
that, that each claim to be full implementations in python.  One for 
python2, one for python3, and one for docs. Will those work as well?

I find the same on one of my wintel boxes, libmodbus5 is installed on 
buster.
