You normally dont use read-request unless you have multiple Mesa Ethernet cards in the same system. The point of read request is that you can issue multiple read requests without waiting for individual responses, this much improves the througput whenm multiple cards are used.

Starting the driver will setup and interrogate the SSerial remotes, reading the remotes setup information and creating hal pins/parameters, but they will not have the periodic communications that blink the green lights unless a thread that does the hm2 reads and writes is running.
