Sometimes you may want to register a part using a feature that's a known coordinate distance from where you want to "zero" for the purposes of the program; you don't have to zero the machine at the touch-off point. Sometimes you can write a nice, easy to read routine if only you use a machine zero that's just plain not any good to touch off - like the middle of a face. Or maybe you're cleaning up a castment that has wiggle-room for zero but you want to get as close to the middle as possible in case there's porosity. Or stay away from a sprue or vent, or many other reasons. Well, what you can do is touch off on a feature like the corner of that face and tell the machine "Zero is right over there". And many machines come with buttons which "reset" one or more axes by doing exactly this - only with a canned routine.
