Yah..  I just install the latest distro and copy the configs.  Can you pull
the hd and install the distro on a different computer?

How far back will that technique go? I have a lathe with 2.5.4 on whatever Ubuntu dist was used then. Would like to move up to the latest so I can use G71 stuff. Any big problems to this?

Well, migrating from anything less than 2.7 (I think)  up to 2.9 will be an issue due to the change from just axes to joints-axes. You have to add some additional stanzas in the .ini file to define the connections when in joint (pre-homed) and world (post-homed) modes.  That was the big change that caused issues in just using the old hal and ini files.

As far as installing Linux on one computer and moving the disk to another machine, this often works amazingly well, it seems they have all the usual drivers loaded in every install.  Of course, if you install a 64-bit kernel and try to run it on a 32-bit only CPU, you won't get far.  I think the boot manager will load the kernel and then die with a black screen.
