I want to see if its feasible if trixie doesn't fix my now damned
near 3
year old problem with Debian. Which is a 30 second total system
freeze
when trying to open a file or files I own. There is a 30 second
timeout
while I stare at a frozen system, that nags me 20 to 150 times a day.
Does it freeze the system or only the app?
Generally its system wide
Do you use automounter, NFS
or samba shares?
no, I generally use sshfs mounts for intermachine sharing. No NFS or
CIFS installed. root ssh(fs) acess denied.
I would check if there are some hanging network
mounts. If possible, check hanging processes which state they are in
('D' means "uninterruptible wait", i.e. waiting for some blocking file-
I/O to complete, hanging NFS mount could cause that). Check your DNS
settings and if you usual hosts resolve.
How do I see that in the time the freeze exists? Chicken/egg problem.
Hosts file based home network, anything powered up pins fine by name.
There is a dhcpd, configed to answer one MAC for a QIDI 3d printer thats
hard coded.
OFFTOPIC background: I am my own ntpsec server for most of my machines
here, so I am not hitting on the debian pool too hard. NTP goes thru my
router in the IPV4 address space, so at any one snoop I have 2 to 4
out_of_my_net stratum 2 clients. No ipv6 addresses within 100 miles of
me but ntp claims it can answer an ipv6 query. IPV6 doesn't get thru my
router at present. dd-wrt has very sharp teeth.
Also if possible check if programs using different GUI frameworks and
file open dialogs are affected the same (assuming that is what you mean
by "open").
That would appear to be related. strace also outputs this:
(orca-slicer:3213959): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 12:30:52.207:
gtk_widget_set_size_request: assertion 'width >= -1' failed
1. lo : 127.0.0.1
2. eno1 : 192.168.71.3
3. docker0: 172.17.0.1
But I don't recall ever installing docker but everything with gtk_widget
in its name is installed. So it s/not fail...
Yet I've had trouble with ghostly greyed or invisible tiny icons in lots
of software. Many times I've had to click on what looks like a blank
area on the screen to find a function others can see clearly.
Also check dmesg if there is something going on with memory pressure or
processes getting killed because of OOM.
32 gigs of main memory, all good ack memtest. Many(12+) Tbytes of
SSD's, not all of which are mounted but are powered up so the
housekeeping can work.

Robert
