Thank you Andy for tips, dpkg did install the package but something
was wrong, LinuxCNC sample config started with error that "rtapi.conf
not found". That seemed like problem due to error in install.
So now I want to thank Robert for the link, I did build the deb
package from source, got it installed, LinuxCNC sample config starts,
Axis GUI shows up!!! So far so good.

I was "slightly concerned" about the plot in latency histogram:

It is Dell Latitude 5550 laptop (to be used with Mesa 7i96), in BIOS I
turned off everything I could find - all the CPU c-states,
hyperthreading and I think there was something more. Played with
isolcpus as I still do not actually believe that there are 12 cores
(more like 6 cores and 12 threads) so just to be sure to cover 1 core,
I isolated 10 and 11 just to be sure.
So I got this: https://ibb.co/zTsZSk3r
The thing is that old laptop had this: https://ibb.co/fVD2SJfp
What I am worried are those few cycles with insane deviation, max is
453 usec with cycle time of 1000 usec.
Colleagues already complained that with old laptop there are occasions
when LinuxCNC stops with error about not being able to read 7i96
board (and that is bad bcause coil does stop but it is stays on thus
baking the specimen in particular spot).
I did find a forum thread but that was scarce on things to try:
https://forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/56231-getting-setup-with-pc-and-mesa
Is there any other place that contains some more things I can try to
improve those extreme deviations?
Or maybe the kernel is no good and I should put some Debian preemt-rt
kernel there? (But then I need some instructions as I could not find
any post. and synaptic provides approximately zero results for
"linux-image-rt" search querry).
Thanks in advance!

Viesturs
