Thanks for all the tips, that's very helpful. After further testing, I don't think this has anything to do with Emms.
I use GuixSD and I experience strange behaviour when I re-log to my session: pulseaudio is started multiple times. -- Pierre Neidhardt As President I have to go vacuum my coin collection!
