----------empyre- soft-skinned space----------------------
Dear Tim and Renate
Thanks for this invite to share bios. I'm new to -empyre-and am
enjoying quietly lurking and learning from the wonderful discussions.
Here's a brief bit about my practice -
Sue Hawksley
I am a dance artist and bodywork therapist, currently based in
Edinburgh, Scotland. I established my company articulate animal in
2007 as an umbrella for interdisciplinary inquiry focused on the
moving body. My choreographic practice is concerned primarily with
movement and issues around identity and territory. I am particularly
interested in interdisciplinary and collaborative practice, and
exploring the interstices between forms, cultures, media. Some of my
performance works engage technological mediation and interactive
performance environments, such as Bodytext (2010), Blowup (2008),
Mutsugoto (2009), I am I was (a dying swan) (2000); some emphasise
language, such as Bodytext (2010), danced process #1 (2008), Passport
(2006); some highlight collaboration with a composer such as carrier
(2007) and re-membering(s) (2009). I have had commissions from New
Media Scotland Alt-W awards; citymoves Aberdeen; Northern School of
Contemporary Dance and the Dance School of Scotland, and my work has
been performed at venues including the Mondavi Centre, UC Davis; the
Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow; the Place, London; Dance Base,
Edinburgh; Critical Path, Sydney; Inspace, Edinburgh and Peacock
Visual Arts, Aberdeen.
Trained in classical ballet at the Royal Ballet School, London
(graduated 1983) I have since worked as a contemporary dance
performer, choreographer and educator. I have performed with Rambert
Dance Company, Mantis Dance, Scottish Ballet and cie. Philippe Genty
among others, in works by choreographers including Merce Cunningham,
Trisha Brown, Siobhan Davies, Richard Alston, Ashley Page and Michael
Clark. I have been practicing as a massage and bodywork therapist
since 1991, and somatic approaches deeply inform all aspects of my
work. I hold a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College
of Art (awarded 2012). My research critically examines concepts of
embodiment through choreographic and somatic practices, philosophy,
and mediation.
Current practice and research includes solo performance work engaging
touch as a choreographic medium, and a collaborative project
developing an interactive performance installation environment
employing 3D tracking of performers with multi-source voice
recognition for speech to text, and a multi-channel data driven sound
score. I am interested in the phenomenal experience of performing
within such complex interactive and emergent environments, and in
developing methods to facilitate performers' capacity to cope.
I am currently Senior Lecturer in Dance (Performance and Choreography)
at the University of Bedfordshire, UK.
