Hello All,

   Has anyone experienced this problem?

My xterm window in which I was working on a decrypted ENCFS file crashed
and disappeared. I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I tried several times to
decrypt it and get it back. I did get the decrypted directory back, but it
was now empty. I next looked inside the actual encrypted directory (
begins with the 'dot' character ) and then really became alarmed. This
encrypted directory which used to hold many sub-directories was now
completely empty. At this point I am thinking I have a hardware problem.
Knowing that I might have to find and restore these lost files, I didn't
want to take any chances of writing over their sectors by keeping the Linux
session up so I shut it down.

I have a dual boot laptop. Windows XP is the other OS. I booted that
up and within 5 minutes, it crashed with the 'blue screen of death'. There
was some ominous message about why it shut down and that it was somehow
trying to prevent further damage. At this point, I was fairly certain I
had some hardware problem and my main concern was to find and restore my
'lost' encrypted files.

I took my hard drive to the Geek Squad. They could retrieve the files
from the file system as it exists but could not retrieve my encrypted files
since they were no longer in the file system. Again, I am hoping they are
still on the hard drive someplace.

At present, I have take the hard drive to a second PC repair shop in
town. They are still working on it. So far they see no hardware problems
with either the laptop or its hard drive. However, they also have not yet
been able to recover my 'lost' files.

Has anyone else had a similar kind of experience?

   Thanks for you feedback!

   Regards,

   David McAllister
