Honoring 16 Days of Global Activism: The Reproductive Health for Refugees Consortium Update of GBV-Related Activities
In recognition of the 16 Days of Global Activism Against Gender Violence, the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children (WCRWC) and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) would like to update you on resources they are developing, under the auspices of the Reproductive Health for Refugees Consortium (RHRC), to improve international and local capacity to address gender-based violence (GBV) among refugee and conflict-affected populations. One resource is an annotated web-based bibliography, now posted at www.rhrc.org/tech/sgbv. Many of the bibliography's 600+ references contain direct links to articles, training and education materials, and advocacy tools related to addressing gender-based violence in conflict and post-conflict environments. Another resource also available on the same link is a consultancy paper by Maya Steinitz, whose review of "The Role of International Law in the Struggle Against Sex-based and Gender-based Violence Against Refugee Women" was made possible with the support of the IRC's Protection Unit. Yet another resource is the RHRC's global overview of gender-based violence, containing 12 country profiles of conflict-affected populations in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. The global overview, which investigates the various types of GBV as well as the successes and limitations of prevention and response activities in the countries under investigation, will be available for dissemination and review in early 2002. In Fall 2002, upon completion of a series of field tests of standardized instruments designed to assist in the qualitative and quantitative assessment of GBV, a Monitoring and Evaluation Field Tools Manual will be made widely available by the RHRC to international and local GBV program planners and managers. During these 16 days of Global Activism, you are invited to take a moment to access the bibliography and the consultancy report. Should you have any questions regarding RHRC's activities to address gender-based violence, please feel free to contact Jeanne Ward, Gender-based Violence Research Officer for the RHRC's GBV Initiative ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
