Dear End-Violence Working Group Members,
The Machreq/Maghreb Gender Linking and Information Project (MACMAG
GLIP) a project of the Center for Research and Training on Development
CRTD - has launched a research study to map existing NGO-led strategies
and interventions targeting women suffering from gender based violence.
Domestic violence is a social phenomenon that has long existed due
to popular social practices, regardless of social, religious, ethnical,
and social origins. In Lebanon, domestic violence is still considered
as a taboo, which remains occulted in order to preserve family unity
and reputation. Disturbingly, this issue widely affects the Lebanese
society. According to the police and tribunals records, 1011 cases
of violence and abuse have been recorded in 1997 and 36% of the public
opinion still denies the existence of such a problem.
Therefore, it is urgent to help the female victims and take the following
measures:
- to put in place institutional mechanisms or reinforce the existent
ones
- to provide medical, judicial, and psychological counseling
- to acknowledge, support, and promote counseling and rehabilitation
programs
Furthermore, NGOs play a major role in the civil society and back
the victims of injustice.
This research project aims at mapping and assessing NGOs interventions
that provide services to sexually assaulted women by their partners
in Great Beirut in order to act consequently. Its objective consists
also of raising public awareness regarding the issue and the need
to change.
It covers all NGOs, social and family services which may not be formally
implementing an intervention directly targeting women victims of
gender based violence. In doing so, the research hopes to shed the
light on the various indirect strategies that NGOs dealing with families
and women develop in the course of their regular programs. The results
of their study which was launched a year ago cover some 250 NGOs
and are expected in mid 2002.
Its findings are expected to be relevant and useful for policy makers,
development NGOs, women groups and government bodies.
