Dear Colleagues:

In the past several days, a number of participants have requested that we
share information / tools that are being used across different cultures.

Since 1998, the Western Hemisphere Region of International Planned
Parenthood Federation (IPPF/WHR) has been carrying out a multi-country
project to integrate gender-based violence (GBV) screening, services and
advocacy as an integral part of the sexual and reproductive health services
(SRH) provided by its affiliates in Brazil, Dominican Republic, Peru and
Venezuela.

Since this initiative represented the first time that IPPF/WHR was
systematically attempting to integrate GBV into SRH services, a great deal
of effort has been made to thoroughly evaluate the project. In addition to
collecting data on providers' knowledge, attitude and practices, we have
also documented screening levels at all sites and a number of other
indicators. At present, we are carrying out a mid-term assessment to look
at the impact that all of our activities (training of providers, integrating
universal screening of women, providing legal / psychological / medical
services, etc.) have had on improving women's lives. The methodology for
this (primarily) qualitative evaluation was jointly developed by
representatives from the countries and outside consultants and we hope to be
able to share the results and the methodology during the first semester of
2002.

For now, however, we can offer a series of documents and tools in our
website that, perhaps with some adaptation depending on the cultural
context, might be useful in your settings as well. Among the documents, you
will find the four issues of our bulletin 'Basta!'
(http://www.ippfwhr.org/whatwedo/basta.html) which documents case studies
and lessons learned in the process of integrating GBV into SRH.

You will also find the Spanish translation and adaptation of five booklets
containing Diagnostic and Treatment Guidelines on Family Violence originally
published by the American Medical Association
(http://www.ippfwhr.org/resources/violencia.html).

As for the tools that are available through our website (most of them are
available in both Spanish and English)
(http://www.ippfwhr.org/whatwedo/gbv.html), they include:

1. Operations definitions of Gender-Based Violence?

2. Screening Tool: This tool assists service providers by providing simple
and direct questions to ask clients about different types of violence.

3. Sample Stamp for Client Intake Form to Record Information on GBV:
Designed to accompany the Screening Tool, the Stamp allows providers to
adapt their client intake forms easily to include information about
gender-based violence.

4. Management Checklist: This is designed to help coordinators ensure that
the most essential steps in the process of developing a GBV project are
being carried out effectively.

5. Legal Framework for Service Providers Addressing Gender-Based Violence:
What providers need to know in order to help victims.

6. Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices Questionnaire for Health Care
Providers: This is designed to collect data on providers' knowledge,
attitudes and practices relating to gender-based violence (available only in
Spanish).

7. Observation Guide: Consists of an interview guide and a checklist to help
coordinators monitor the implementation of GBV activities (available only in
Spanish).

I hope these will be helpful.

All the best,
