I am not sure I understand what research you are looking for - but I know of one research project in Finland where the total costs of domestic violence have been estimated. They amounted to (for the whole of Finland, with a population of about 5 millions, costs converted to MUSD = millions of US dollars): 45 MUSD in direct costs: - legal costs, 24 MUSD (prisons 12 MUSD, lawsuits 6 MUSD, police 6 MUSD) - social sector costs, 13 MUSD (therapies 5 MUSD, asylums 4 MUSD, social services 3 MUSD, crisis services 1 MUSD) - health sector costs, 6 MUSD (medication 3 MUSD, hospital & other medical treatment 3 MUSD) - other direct costs, 2 MUSD plus 55 .. 100 MUSD in indirect costs, as estimated due to lost lives, decrease in life quality (physical & psychical illness), losses in production because of absence from work etc. The research report was published last year: - Heiskanen M, Piispa M, 'Vakivallan hinta' - Naisiin kohdistuvan vakivallan kustannukset Suomessa. Tilastokeskus 2000. ISSN 1236-9977. Unfortunately the report is written in Finnish, but I have the impression that it was going to be translated into English, maybe is already translated. Anyway, if you are interested in this report, you can contact Pirkko Kiviaho ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) from the Council of Gender Equality.
