I support a Java App that has several places where we do RMI. (Counting clients we have Java running on 5 different tiers of machines. We use RMI on several of the tier to tier connections.) I'm still a newbie with Rails but it seems like any serious enterprise app will need to have an RMI like mechanism for the various tiers to talk together.
