Ok, Tino. And I really enjoyed that you read my message :-))) However, you needn't correct me. The term 'native tongue'' is also used, though less frequently.
You cannot state that a term is incorrect just because it's not a part of your active vocabulary. English has, whether we like it or not, a lot of word combinations. I've had many troubles along the way with people trying to correct me when no correction was necessary. There's also one more term : mother tongue ( and this one can replace 'native language'). I don't actually think it's a mistake. I didn't learn the American English if that's on what you base your assertion. I learnt the British English and its variations and collocations all over the world. Just for the record, here it goes many websites on which the term 'native tongue' is used: http://www.hoganstand.com/general/Identity/dictionary.htm (from Ireland) http://www.aut.ac.nz/staff/insideaut/2006_may/fostering_the_native.htm (from New Zealand) http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2008/07/27/20080727nativetongues0727.html (from Arizona, USA) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,159303,00.html?sPage=fnc/entertainment/celebrity/shakira (Fox News, USA) http://www.mp3lyrics.org/r/reverend-horton-heat/native/ (A song by a singer) http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Richard-Barone/Native-Tongue.html (another song!) http://thetyee.ca/News/2007/03/23/RevivingANativeTongue/ (A Canadian realiable news source) http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/opinion/view_article.php?article_id=81112 (from my Phillipine friends, who are also English native speakers). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0294774/ (as a movie title) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2006/12/12/GR2006121200526.html (from Wahington Post) Ok, I've sent too many links.:-))) Have a wonderful day!
