Today I was wondering how to extract the audio from movies in .VOB
format.

Here the tools, both of them Free Software, licensed under GPL
License:

1. DGindex 1.5.4 to convert .VOB to .AC3
2. WinFF 1.0 to convert .AC3 to .MP3.

First part.

You can get DGindex, part of the DGMPGDec package, from here:

http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html

(1) Download and uncompress the file dgmpgdec154.zip e.g. in the
folder dgmpgdec154, and
(2) just execute the binary DGIndex.exe.
(3) Open all the .VOB movie files you want
(4) Select 'File -> Save project'.
(5) Select the output folder, create one if needed
(6) Wait some few minutes and look for the resulting files, keep the
resulting .ac3 file and delete the files ou don't need.

Here a illustrative guide: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dgindex.htm

Second part.

You can get, WinFF from here:

http://code.google.com/p/winff/downloads/list

(1) Download, execute and install WinFF-1.0-setup.exe from the
downloads page
(2) Open the .ac3 file to convert, click on the green 'Add' button.
(3) Select 'Convert to -> Audio'
(4) Select 'Device preset -> MP3'
(5) Select the 'Output folder' or create one if needed
(6) Click on the 'Convert' button and wait a couple of minutes. It
took to me one minute or two to convert a half an hour .ac3 audio file
to .mp3 format.
(5) Click on the 'convert' option

Well, don't miss it's manual:

Copy the resulting file to your mp3 player and enjoy!
