AFAIK UTF-8 and UTF-16 autodetection only works if the file starts with a proper Byte Order Marker (BOM); however most PHP installations as well as some web browsers can't handle script files or web pages properly if they contain a BOM prefix. -- PSPad freeware editor http://www.pspad.com
