Hi Sini,

as far as I see it, noone answered until now, sorry for that. I'll try now.

You cross-posted to two lists, in general please don't. This reply is to the
Engiamil list only. Please focus on Enigmail issues here and on gpg-agent
issues on the GnuPG users' list.

You did have linux/desktop environment specific problems, and got some answers
for them. I'll not comment on those since I am currently not using a linux
desktop myself.

> [...] harassed repeatedly for decryption I have not requested [...] [...]

On all system I support/use (Fedora 17+18, Ubuntu 11.10+12.04, Mac OS 10.6-10.8,
Windows 7+8) I have/had no issues as you described them. Many users don't have.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you do believe you that you do experience
these issues. I'm telling you that I cannot reproduce yet since I still have no
idea what's causing it. For you to compare: since at least two years I only use
GnuPG 2.x and the current Thunderbird release versions but Enigmail releases
and nightlies. I cache my passphrase for several minutes (not until end of
session), settings are in gpg-agent.conf, Enigmail doesn't handle passphrases.

> One work around would be to let my email program always cache my key

If you have GnuPG 2.x on your system, Enigmail doesn't cache any passprase.
GnuPG, namely gpg-agent does. It is configured in ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf,
see ignore-cache-for-signing, default-cache-ttl and max-cache-ttl in
http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gnupg/Agent-Options.html

> I've chosen not to install the plugin

While I can understand your decision very well, this will not reveal the cause
of the problem.

> I turned off all automatic decryption

A good idea to narrow down the problem in case there is a bugin Enigmail.
But the automatism should only be triggered by the current preview pane or
it you open messages in separate tabs/windows, not by background tasks.

On all my systems, this setting is enabled and although it is, Enigmail never
starts decrypting things on it's own. Only when I actively display some message.

Also a good idea when trying to drill down for a culprit's cause.

I don't get that one. How does your rule look like? What is it you want to
achieve by it? Did you try to backup pgprules.xml and delete it for testing?
(general reference: http://www.enigmail.net/documentation/pgprules_file.php)

> - I don't click on the encryption key before I'm about to send

So you save your drafts (IMAP/now local) UNENCRYPTED and UNSIGNED. Correct?

Please enable logging of your filters and Enigmail debugging. Next time, please
take down the time when such unenxpected passphrase request happens so you can
check both logs later on.

Just encrypted or also signed? There is no need for a passphrase while
encrypting.

Same: was that draft signed, too? BTW: do you use a SmartCard for the your key?

Yes, it should, please check what actually IS saved on the server/in the local
drafts folder.

Hmmm, yes. Did you test with a complete new profile, I mean a new system user?
If I encounter such problems, I add another user to my OS, set up a new basic
TB profile, install EM, import and edit trust for the few keys I need to test,
and test things there. Without many old settings, keys or other AddOns.

Did you set gpg-agent's cache ttl to zero (or 1) somewhere (user specific or
system wide settings, (self-compiled/distro) built-in default) on your system?
This would explain such behavior. To me it reads like gpg-agent is just not
working properly.

> I [created] a new file ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf. It contains the line

I did not have to add this line to any of my systems (using distro settings) to
work properly with gpg-agent.

> I've been unable to start an Enigmail log file.

Huh? That's strange. You did notice that, advanced settings > debugging doesn't
need a file but a folder, right?
