Just for future reference, it turns out that rebooting the computer causes Thunderbird to ask for the passphrase again. Restarting Thunderbird and other programs was insufficient. Presumably, something was cached and the cache expired. I have no idea what. Hopefully this will help some poor slob who hits this again. -a
