Ahoy Murray,

I recommend *not* to use HTML e-mails. If you need to specifically
compose HTML e-mails, you can press the *SHIFT-Button* while clicking on
"write", "reply" or "forward". Then the compose window opens with the
HTML editor.

P.S.: If you really want to send HTML e-mails on default, you can still
use the SHIFT-Button to compose with the HTML editor turned off.
