Your strange experience maybe was the result of a corrupted
localstore.rdf file (located in the profile directory). I once had
strange window settings which were - other than in your case - not
fixable by normal user action. I had to delete this file. Afterwards I
had to readjust all window settings to my requirements, but
Thunderbird was usable again :-)

So: No waste of time; a hint for others searching for a solution in a
similar painful situation...
