I don't recall the conversation - but it sounds to me as though the OP
has not set his Thunderbird account to use Enigmail.

Tools > Account Settings >Select the account > OpenPGP security > Tick -
Enable OpenPGP support (Enigmail) for this identity.

Add any other details required.
