Unfortunately, "Edit As New" is implemented by Thunderbird in the same way as "Edit from Template". In other words, all flags and references in the editor window are identical for both cases, which makes it impossible to distinguish the two cases. We have a special logic for handling templates and drafts, and a different logic for replies.
