i think google was trying to get end-to-end security installed as well.     the answer is to use PGP/MIME -- which is a container format -- and should be handled the same in any vendor's software.   but the keyword is 'vendor'.     these clowns like to make exceptions so they can crow "ours works; theirs doesn't"

consider writing the message in LibreOffice Writer and then apply GnuPG -- use GPG2 of course -- at command line; then send the ciphertext as an attachment.   no amount of screaming and yelling will make these greedy corporations adhere to standards
