I've to admit the issue was related to my setup... :(
I used keychain to check for a running {gpg,ssh}-agent. If either of
them is not running, it starts them right away. The earliest point to
do so is in .profile.
But, if i log in, none of the agents are running. Even none of the
scripts in /etc/xdg/autostart have been executed.
Therefore, keychain starts a gpg-agent. Furthermore,
/etc/xdf/autostart/90gpg-agent doesn't do anything because an agent is
already running...
In addition to that, something is wrong with the way keychain sets up
the gpg-agent. That caused the issue i observed in thunderbird.
After i removed that particular line from .profile,
/etc/xdf/autostart/90gpg-agent starts a gpg-agent and everything is
fine....
