Actually, this makes perfect sense and I wish more sites would do just that.

Other than for artistic or branding purposes, the generic font families
-- serif, sans-serif, monospace, cursive and fantasy -- are more than
enough for most sites.  If, on top of that, the web designers used the
default font-sizes (small, medium, large, etc.) instead of fixed lengths
(points, pixels, cm), then each user could set the browser configuration
that felt more comfortable for him/her in each device.  To the
complaints about the look of the fonts on the site, the developers could
just point out that the font and its relative size is a users' choice :^)

Also, if a sufficient number of sites followed this practice, maybe the
browser vendors would set sensible default configurations or, yet
better, would start shipping nice default fonts with their browsers. 
Unfortunately, I don't see this fashion catching on any time soon :^(
