you can't go from ft1 to ft2 in a regex :) its different enough :) as i said...
there's code sitting there.. in cvs.. in evas. its easy to find.
the benefits of ft2 is its current and supported. ft1 is deprecated (like imlib1.x).
imlib2 could save a chunk of code inside e16 and do the ttf rendering for e16 easily,
but as kainx said. it's not trivial. not to mention imlib2 is also in needing to be
ported to ft2 (which is of much more use).
i personally don't have the time - but it's on imlib2's TODO list, and there is
perfectly happy working code in evas that uses imlib2. it's quite virtualized and
fairly independent (except for its reliance on the blender func and evas's hash tables
and linked lists).
