What do you think of checking /etc/*release to find out what distro
it is and define the dirs "per distro" in the script ?

Guess info about a few of the main distros would be enough, and
leave configurable $KDEAPPLNKDIR $GNOMEAPPLNKDIR $OTHERAPPLNKDIR in
the script, so the advanced user can also easily modify the script.

Why do most Linux users seem to think everyone uses Linux?

Actually I believe any person who can use BSD, solaris or any such OS on his/her desktop is capable of editing a few lines of a script to define where the necessary files are, as I mentioned above. What in my mind was a bit for the "newbie".

Any suggestions to define other OS so that the script will know where the files are already ?

I don't really like the idea of incorporating assumptions about what is installed where for particular distributions.

Maybe any "{gnome,kde}-config --prefix" results are useful?

As for "$KDEAPPLNKDIR $GNOMEAPPLNKDIR $OTHERAPPLNKDIR",
I don't know if that makes much sense.
It seems to me that the .desktop files these days all go into <prefix>/share/applications.

Nobody seems to care much anyway, so maybe I should just drop my e_gen_menu suggestion into the scripts dir as e_gen_menu.new.
Or is it plain useless?
