Hi,

I’m new to this list, so first and foremost hello to everyone.

I'm new to Linux and Linux development (and open source projects for
this
matter). My problem is that after seeing the Enlightenment project I found
something where I'd really like to collaborate. I don’t know how far or how
much, but as far as my free time allows me, I’ll give it a try.

There are two main areas where I’d like to focus: usability support and
3D
interface development.

By usability support I mean to add the elements that keep me from using
E
as my window manager of choice at work (yes, I’m using it at home, but when
I use a Linux computer at work, I must work with KDE to be fast –I still see
things that just don’t allow me to be comfortable and productive in
Enlightenment- I’m aware that this may be a lack of understanding of the E16
configuration possibilities, but I think this is not the case). I want to
address those things and add them to E in a *different* way.

By 3D support I mean to provide the elements that current 3D hardware
allow
and that could increase the usability, look and feel, and comfort of the
window manager.

Before this I’d need to read about the X libraries and the related Linux
modules. That is the reason of this post.

As far as I can guess now, I’d need to be able to handle windows, render
them to bitmaps, manage and work with the desktop video memory (or whatever
is called the surface screen where the windows are rendered), learn about
Linux timers and all the related modules and libraries. I really hope that
there will be libraries useful for this within the EFL :)

Now that the full code is in CVS, I’ll start reading it. But a first
question is for a good book or web reference to learn about X development.
Those of you that already know the E code would know what a new person is
expected to know before starting to use it.

Any help on this would be really welcome.

Best regards,

        - Juan
