(B> Hi,
(B>
(B> I__m new to this list, so first and foremost hello to everyone.
(B
(Bbuenas dias :)
(B
(B> I'm new to Linux and Linux development (and open source projects for
(B> this
(B> matter). My problem is that after seeing the Enlightenment project I found
(B> something where I'd really like to collaborate. I don__t know how far or how
(B> much, but as far as my free time allows me, I__ll give it a try.
(B>
(B> There are two main areas where I__d like to focus: usability support and
(B> 3D
(B> interface development.
(B
(Bwell usability - sure. 3d... not a good idea. 3d support in x is nasty and
(Bunstable. for anything other than fullscreen 3d games its rather a waste as the
(Bdriver writes don't much care beyond quake3 benchmarks. so you will hit a world
(Bof hurt when you go there - i suggest you don't.
(B
(B> By usability support I mean to add the elements that keep me from using
(B> E
(B> as my window manager of choice at work (yes, I__m using it at home, but when
(B> I use a Linux computer at work, I must work with KDE to be fast __I still see
(B> things that just don__t allow me to be comfortable and productive in
(B> Enlightenment- I__m aware that this may be a lack of understanding of the E16
(B> configuration possibilities, but I think this is not the case). I want to
(B> address those things and add them to E in a *different* way.
(B
(Bif you're talking about adding to e16 - e17 has a LOOOT less so we're still busy
(Bbuilding just the basics - like we don't even have virtual desktops or
(Bkeybindings. just a s a start...
(B
(B> By 3D support I mean to provide the elements that current 3D hardware
(B> allow
(B> and that could increase the usability, look and feel, and comfort of the
(B> window manager.
(B
(Bthe problem is the only thing 3d can help with is 2d rendering and as above -
(Busing opengl in windows on screen (multiple) is just horrid and in the end a
(Bwaste of time and stability is horrid. you have lock contention, insanely jerky
(Bupdates and more. what needs doing is xrender needs fixing so the 2d imaging
(Bpipeline of x is decent. and fixing not just for 1 driver. the software
(Bfallabcks need fixing too. a LOT of fixing.
(B
(B> Before this I__d need to read about the X libraries and the related
(B> Linux
(B> modules. That is the reason of this post.
(B
(Boh you have a lot to learn then! :)
(B
(B> As far as I can guess now, I__d need to be able to handle windows,
(B> render
(B> them to bitmaps, manage and work with the desktop video memory (or whatever
(B> is called the surface screen where the windows are rendered), learn about
(B> Linux timers and all the related modules and libraries. I really hope that
(B> there will be libraries useful for this within the EFL :)
(B
(Blearning x is a bit of a black art... you kind of learn by osmosis and tonnes of
(Btrial and error :) there are manual pages but thats not a lot of help. sample
(Bcode is good. there are some books but non i would class as a good way to learn
(Bto code good x stuff on modern systems.
(B
(B> Now that the full code is in CVS, I__ll start reading it. But a first
(B> question is for a good book or web reference to learn about X development.
(B> Those of you that already know the E code would know what a new person is
(B> expected to know before starting to use it.
(B>
(B> Any help on this would be really welcome.
(B>
(B> Best regards,
(B>
(B> - Juan
