OK, after the cache is built, e17 starts in 4 seconds, but I get the same problem. Also, I reinstated the multi level menus that use lots of eaps, the first and second levels are there, but not the third level. This was fine when I started e17 with no cache but lots of eaps. The menus have always been the greatest source of e17 crashes for me, and this latest update seems to have made them much more fragile, even though the previous one on the weekend made the menus almost stable. More testing... OK, showing the benefits of lots of ram, and thus lots of OS caching. I'll give e17 the benefit of the doubt for the first figure I posted on start up with no cache. I'm getting 10 to 12 seconds on start up with no cache now, and the cache file is there quicker than I can get around to check it's existence. I could write an automatic checking program, but I am happy with those times. Start up with the cache is 1 - 4 seconds, making e17 comparable to xterm start up times. Well done Rasterman! If you are ever in Brisbane, it's my shout. (Meaning I'll buy him a round of his favourite alcoholic beverage for those that don't speak Australian.) More testing... Ok, the third level menus are there on start up with cache, they go away on a restart after crash. Summary - No cache; start up 10 - 12 seconds; icons everywhere; full menus. Cache; start up 1 - 4 seconds; icons in engage, menus, but not in ALT+TAB, engage minimised task list, or window border; full menus. When e17 crashes, click "restart" button; start up in 1 - 4 seconds; icons in engage, menus, but not in ALT+TAB, engage minimised task list, or window border; only the first two levels of menu. Hmm, you still got some work to do on the cache. Let's hope you don't slow it down much. -- Stuff I have no control over could be added after this line.
