For one of my own open source projects has had a TODO item 
<http://matrix-rad.net/matrix-RAD/docs/coders/TODO.shtml#MODULES> for a
long time to add a verb to the beginning of the mimetype -

verb/mime/mimetype  -> application_to_use_to_verb

As an example -

edit/image/png     -> gimp
display/image/png  -> exhibit

Then the user can choose to load up the possibly huge, full featured
editor proggy for a particular file, or a light weight display only
proggy.
