Google.com, Apple.com and most other relevant business declare HTML in their doctypes. Except from Microsoft.com which uses XHTML. From the top 10 global Alexa websites 6 use HTML and 4 use XHTML. Most relevant sites will simply ignore XHTML and jump from HTML4 to HTML5 when the time comes. HTML4 will be supported by every browser for as long as HTML5 exists [1]. XHTML has some technical merits but its benefits do not overweight its annoyances [2] for this project (7 brochure pages + the news section). Especially when we consider the lesser "web oriented" people that will most likely update the content and news of e.org in the future. The rest of the content is will be generated by either trac or exchange which abstract the annoyances of xhtml from the end users.
